Councillor is backed in row

10:40am Saturday 4th December 2010

A CITY councillor accused by some neighbours of having her drive cleared of snow and gritted by council workmen has been defended by another resident of her street.

Coun Helen Douglas was accused by several fellow residents in Crombie Avenue of getting preferential treatment in the snowy conditions – an allegation she strongly denied.

Now next-door neighbour Neal Cox has come out in defence of Coun Douglas.

He said: “The other day she dug her drive out and the lads who normally do the litter-picking at Marjorie Waite Court just asked me if I wanted some sand because I had done my path and I was throwing table salt down.

“Then they asked if Helen wanted any and they threw down a few shovels-full of sand for her. They were just being helpful.”

Coun Douglas, who represents Clifton for the council’s Labour Group, said yesterday that the van was passing and the men in it offered her the sand.

She also said she would never ask for favours from the council, nor would she expect them.
